Canadian stereotypes ahoy!

An update on the job situation, everyone! I've done the typical Canadian thing, when faced with a difficult choice - compromise.

(I should mention that the Hotel Selkirk interview was a bust - very short, because they can't acommodate my vacation schedule. But I anticipated that, and I hadn't gotten my hopes up. BUT I send my sister their way, so they may hire her instead! So yay, silver lining?)

I have yet to hear back from Professor Muir re: the research assistant position. I still needed to get back really fast re: the Antique Photo Parlour, or I would perhaps face the possibility of having NO job over the summer.

It came down to: the Antique Photo Parlour is a sure thing. I will enjoy my summer with them. I will learn new skills (portrait-taking), and I will have job security (AKA I can have a job over the school year as well, and won't be jobless and anxious like this past year).

THEN I thought: well, what's stopping me from holding down both jobs? Answer: the week-long archival research trip. Which is only a possibility - it may not even be necessary, what with the huge numbers of digitized documents and the fact that the University of Alberta is plugged into one of the largest library networks in North America. Plus, our own archives aren't too shabby either. Coupled with the fact that the research assistant position has extremely flexible hours... I could theoretically work both. Like, not working 9am-5pm shifts in the library, but four hours here, six hours there, and more time on my "days off" from the Antique Photo Parlour.

And that's IF I get the research assistant position, which isn't a surety.

So I went with the safe (and fun!) option: the Antique Photo Parlour (while keeping my options open for the other position).

I just wanted to thank everyone for all of your advice. I'm not going to lie: this was a really difficult decision to make. I think that you all made very good points... nd I myself was torn, a bit, because someone would convince me very nicely, and then I'd read the next person's comment only to be completely convinced of the OPPOSITE opinion. ;) Still, it's what I needed.

So... yeah. Bottom line is I have a summer job! Maybe two! We'll see how this pans out. :) Than you once again, guys!

(Man, do I feel so much better after having made an actual DECISION... That's a weight off of my chest. Maybe now I can actually enjoy my summer?)

Your summer job sounds pretty cool, I have to say. (And also, you said in your last post that you wouldn't be able to do the research trip because August is their busiest month at the Photo Parlour - if necessary, would you be able to do it earlier in the summer, or try to incorporate more of your days off or something like that? Or would it simply be not an option?)

In any case, I do hope you get to have the best of both worlds!

(Also, I'm finished exams, as of half an hour ago! Whoo! :D)

Yeah, I'm not sure about the trip vis-a-vis the Antique Photo Parlour position. But MAYBE it would be more reasonable to only ask for a week off as opposed to three weeks PLUS another week long vacation? I'll cross that bridge later. ;)

Also, we need to get together! ... I want to see How To Train Your Dragon again... What are you doing Thursday evening? :3

This Thursday? I'm at the library until 4:00; after that, nothing.

I'm not sure what I'm up to Thursday - I could be starting my new job... which is also at the university (I decided to accept the research assistant position). SO I may be ending at about the same time... we could theoretically catch the bus down to the theatre together and watch How To Train Your Dragon. :3

Okay, sure. :) Do you want to meet out by the St. Albert bus stop in order to catch the 4:15 bus? (Theoretically, I could be out there for the 4:03 bus, but that'd be kind of pushing it...)

Turns out that I won't be going to school tomorrow... probably. Maybe. Um... if I don't meet you at the bus stop, I'll send you an e-mail that you can check from home? I'll probably end up picking you up, then, if that's the case. I'll check out movie times...

Ah, I see. Well, I'll be home by about five-thirty-ish - I'll hang out at the University until 4:15 just in case, otherwise I'll check my email around 5:30 (or you could call around 5:45).

All right, so I'm going to show up on campus tomorrow anyway to run a few errands. I can do them in the afternoon, and take the bus home with you. :)

There's a showing of How To Train Your Dragon at 5:15 at the Cineplex Odeon. I'm thinking... maybe I could do park and ride at the theatre (a radical notion!), and so I can give you a ride home afterwards. :)

And I imagine that would work out just fine. Park and ride at the theatre would probably be a good idea, actually - I'm not sure how late buses run, after all. Otherwise, I can call home and probably get a ride with one of my parents.

Apply for the front desk or housekeeping position at the Hotel Selkirk at Fort Edmonton! The lady is really nice, and it's a super-neat job... just pretend to love 1920s and wow them with the beauty of your voice and you'll be in. :)
