(quote in subject line is something that's been floating around in my head for a while; I think that I learned it like five or six years ago, and I've long forgotten who said it, other than the fact that it wasn't me.)

Today, I worked for nearly five hours on my new costume for Animethon. It's... coming along. Anybody who's ever sewn anything before will tell you that the first (huge) chunk of time that you spend on these things is mostly cutting out fabric. D:

I decided to be artistic this time and post in-progress shots taken at weird angles, because that's the way I roll.

Oh, and before I forget... I'm going as the titular character of the Chevalier D'Eon. I can put my French and history skillz to use with this character! :D For the curious, here is a shot of the outfit that I'm in the process of making (minus helmet, sword and horse):

Anyway....

I went to Fabricland before lunch and picked up everything I needed, including the frillion or so buttons I'll be needing... Except that I forgot to buy navy blue thread. I know that I have two spools of it (at least) kicking around the house, from my costume two years ago. They're here... somewhere. But I don't have time to look for them, so I'm just going to bike back down to Fabricland (it's a half-hour bikeride from my house) to buy some more. Yay for exercise. D:
 
 Here be the mess of paper, just as I began cutting out the pattern. I've been working in the kitchen, by the way. Yay for large tables that already have a billion scratch marks on them! :D

Whoa, that looks like a lot of work.

I've only ever done small things when it comes to sewing (like shortening my jeans, sewing a patch on a schoolbag or making a small felt doll plus its clothes), but even that took me forever... I wish you luck in your enterprise, and few pokes with those pins. I swear the blasted things are out to get me whenever I use them. :P

This is actually my most ambitious project yet. I have much more experience now, though - my friend Ashley and I just finished making epic riding cloaks. Come to think of it, I should post a picture of mine soon. I'll get around to it tomorrow, I think. Hopefully.
