On my old computer, I'd abuse Word's autocorrect. I'd write cliche, it would add in the accent for me like a good little program, and I'd delete the rest of the word and have an accent just where I wanted it. I had to actually learn how to insert characters for science lab reports, but I'd list them at the bottom so I only had to go searching for alpha/the degree sign/chemical compounds with too many subscripted numbers once.
