Yes, well, the point of the excuse is that it's rather implausible, but people WANT to believe in the natural explanation and not the supernatural, right? I mean, the first time you see a fancy-looking sleek new car, you don't automatically think "ZOMG it has come from the future!" you think "oh, it must be one of the newer models", right?
